Chapter 20

When I offered to make that study date with Jess, I was only thinking about keeping Gordon’s attention on me. I wanted him to see me being “school Kayla,” hanging out with my friends and being a normal seventeen-year-old girl. But Jess, clearly feeling slighted by everything I’ve kept her out of the loop on, sticks to my side like glue all afternoon. As soon as classes are over, she walks with me to the cafeteria for dinner, then we walk back to our room. She keeps talking about how excited she is. To work on homework. To work on pretend, hypothetical homework.

“Okay, well, in the interest of maximizing efficiency and not wasting unnecessary time,” I say once we get settled and start looking at the sample essay questions, “I don’t think we need to physically write these essays. Let’s just make sure we can verbally explain them to each other, in detail, with examples.”

“Good thinking.” Jess looks down at the sample questions, then looks up at me. “Do you have a boyfriend?”

“That’s not one of the questions.”

“Even if you don’t tell anyone else, I deserve to know.” She looks sad. “Kayla, I am really sorry. I’m sorry that I was so mean to you before we came here. There’s no excuse, but I didn’t really know you then. I don’t know if I ever apologized to you. But I am sorry.”

“I forgive you.”

“I’m serious!”

“I am, too,” I assure her. I appreciate the gesture, but that’s not why I won’t tell her my secret. “We’ve been roommates for the last four years. Do you think I would have continued sharing a room with you if I was still holding a grudge? You’re such a good friend to me. You’re my best friend. You’re a great roommate. This isn’t your fault. I’m not keeping this secret from you because I don’t think we’re good enough friends. Not telling anyone is killing me. But I cannot tell anyone what happened. It’s not an option. I can’t.”

“I know. You said that,” Jess mumbles sullenly.

“Come on,” I urge, eager to change the subject. “Explain the events that led up to the French Revolution and the ramifications of each.”

I keep a close eye on the time as we study. Even though my appointment with Gordon is in the classroom building, and I can get there in less than five minutes if I try, I leave fifteen minutes early. I’m just too excited.

I’m not sure what to expect when I walk in, but the assistant principal, Ms. Corley, is standing right inside the door and says, “Hi, Kayla. Gordon’s ready for you if you want to go in now. He’s in the first classroom on the left.”

“Okay, thanks.”

The desks in the classroom are pushed back, and Gordon is sitting at a portable table, watching me as I walk in.

“Close the door,” he says before I’m fully inside.

I do. “Why? What’s wrong?”

“Nobody needs to see what I’m going to do to you.”

I smirk and walk over to Gordon.
